Black Secret, White Moon
Strategies for the Ghost Stories Expansions
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.”
The dead are not resting easy. Hundreds of years ago, Wu-Feng, the Lord of the Nine Hells, was cast down and defeated. His ashes were buried beneath a small village—but now, Wu-Feng is rising again, sending his ghosts to haunt and devour the villagers. The only ones who stand in the path of these malevolent spirits are a few noble Taoist priests…
In our last article, we explored a few of the strategies that you might use during a game of Ghost Stories to gain the upper hand. Though these may be effective with the base game, there are also two expansions for Ghost Stories, and both of them offer new dangers to overcome before you can save the village. Today, we’ll explore a few more tactics that you may use as a ghostly moon rises and Wu-Feng himself enters the battlefield.
Protect the Villagers
“A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving.”
With the White Moon expansion for Ghost Stories, you’ll find an entirely new aspect of the game—the villagers that inhabit the small settlement you’re protecting. These villagers immediately add a new way to lose the game: if twelve or more of the villagers are killed, you and your fellow players lose! However, if you can shepherd these villagers to safety, you may reap the rewards, including powerful artifacts. The Divine Sword, for instance, grants one automatic success whenever you attempt to exorcise a ghost. Or, you may strap on the Armor of the Just, ignoring the effects of many ghosts and safeguarding you in battle.
The fact that you suffer a terrible punishment for failing to protect the villagers, combined with the artifacts that you can gain from saving them, means that moving these villagers to safety becomes one of your highest priorities. You’ll need to work carefully to destroy ghosts who would devour the villagers, vanquishing them before too many peasants are dragged into the underworld.
White Moon also introduces an ally to aid you—Su-Ling, a young woman who sacrificed herself to stop Wu-Feng centuries ago. Though her mortal form is long gone, she remains as a helpful spirit. Throughout the game, you’ll have to carefully choose when and how to use Su-Ling. Like everything else in the game, she is a resource that you can use in your fight, and she fulfills two primary roles. She can stand in the gap and stop advancing ghosts, but she can also place moon crystals, which will eventually activate a mystical barrier around the village.
You’ll have to consider carefully before you move Su-Ling. It might be tempting to always use Su-Ling to stop powerful ghosts, but sometimes, it’s better to suffer the negative consequences of a ghost if that gives Su-Ling the time to set up the mystical barrier. It takes patience to play the long game in this way, but your efforts will be rewarded by a stunning display of magic when the mystical barrier is fully formed.
The Ultimate Test
“Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.”
If you thought you were prepared for the worst that Ghost Stories had to offer, you’ll need to adjust your expectations with the Black Secret expansion. This expansion immediately changes the game by inviting a single player to play as Wu-Feng himself—unleashing demons and ghosts on the hapless village, as he searches for the urns that contain his ashes. The strategy of playing as Wu-Feng could comprise an entire article by itself, but for now, we’ll focus on some of the best ways to defeat the Lord of the Nine Hells, even when he’s controlled by a human player.
First, it’s important not to let the demons run wild. In this expansion, the forces of darkness gain three types of demons that dig through the catacombs beneath the village, searching for the ashes of Wu-Feng. It’s easy to ignore these demons, especially when you’re facing an endless onslaught of ghosts. If you ignore them for too long, however, you’ll almost certainly regret it, since they can dramatically increase Wu-Feng’s power, or even bring his shadow into the game as another threat that you’ll have to face.
You’ll also have to be more careful with your Qi and how you spend it. The addition of bloody mantras and the blood brothers ability may seem to reward you for losing Qi—but it’s best to think of these abilities as softening the blow of losing Qi, rather than something you should actively try to trigger. There are more ways than ever for the Wu-Feng player to kill the Taoists, and keeping your Qi up is vital to keeping your fighting spirit alive.
Moonlight and Shadow
“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.”
